What's the secret behind Asian women's seemingly ageless skin? It involves following a daily skincare routine religiously, going far beyond smearing a make-up removing wipe on your face before going to bed.
We investigated what women in China, Japan and Korea do to take care of their skin, reading reviews and going by personal recommendations to determine what products work best.
Make-Up Removal & Cleansing
Start off with a light make-up remover, rubbing it gently with a sweeping motion to avoid irritating the eyes. If you want a more deep clean for tougher makeup, opt for a oil cleanser. Follow up with a water-based cleanser to remove any excess oil and other impurities.
Gently massage an exfoliating scrub into your skin 2-3 times a week to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, revealing smooth and silky skin underneath. Avoid sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth.
Toner, Essense & Serum
Here's where we get into the real heart of an Asian skincare routine, and what distinguishes it from any Western alternatives. Toner helps to re-hydrate and balance out the skin after a deep cleansing/exfoliation that can cleanse the skin of natural oils. Essences and serums are more of a concentrated treatment that aid in skin repair and targeting problem areas, like large pores, wrinkles or acne. Use them liberally!
Moisturizer & Eye Cream
No matter what type of skin you have, hydration is key. A good moisturizing lotion protects and improves your skin, while helping to prevent wrinkles and rough skin patches. Top it all off with a hydrating eye cream on the delicate skin around the eyes that needs extra protection. And as always, drink plenty of water!
Rule #1 of all skincare regimes is use SPF daily! If you don't have the time to really pamper your skin before heading out the door in the morning, this is the only step you really can't skip. Using a moisturizer or make-up product with SPF can prevent long-term damage to your skin as a result of sun exposure. Even if the sun isn't shining, be sure to use it.
And last but not least, treat yourself to an intensely moisturizing sheet mask as often as you'd like. Just be sure to warn someone before they see you, or you might really give them a scare!
